Mischief's Summer
Mischief means many things to many people, but author Allen Simmons ratchets up the drama in his tale of love, deceit, assault and revenge. Hero, Jeff Slater, learns disaster can happen when he fakes his age in this edgy novel. Fifteen-year-old Jeff gets hired as a paid hand on luxury yacht Mischief owned by Clifford and Sybil Hinshaw. The owners assume Jeff is eighteen. He's says nothing because he wants a job on a yacht.
This age issue becomes crucial to Jeff, the Hinshaws and their teenaged daughter, Holly. Debauchery finds Jeff via Willow Whitlocke, friend of Sibyl Hinshaw. Jeff sees Willow as evil and his quest is to discover why. Along the journey, Holly and Jeff engage in a first-love romance which brings tragedy to them and others.
Set on New England's coast, the story explores the excesses of the dysfunctional Hinshaw family and delves into the perennial issue of morality. Mischief's Summer is a not only about Jeff's coming of age, it's also about his employer's coming of age through him. This well written tale with surprising twists proves again a sea story is a good story.
